Share ordinary life between visits
A photograph of a hobby, a voice note about a good day or a conversation while making dinner can reveal more than always planning a special call. Ask what kind of contact makes each of you feel included. Leave room for friendships and rest so the relationship can grow within your lives.
Plan visits around both people’s needs
Agree whether a visit is a holiday together or a chance to see someone’s normal working week. Discuss costs and time off without assuming one partner can always travel. Keep your own accommodation and return options, especially on a first meeting. Spending money never creates an obligation to intimacy.
Agree what can be shared with others
A partner may be open with some people and private with others. Check before sending gifts to a workplace, tagging a photo or describing your relationship to someone you have just met. Distance does not make consent to disclosure less important; a small public gesture can reveal more than intended.
Let a shared future become a considered decision
If living closer becomes a serious possibility, discuss careers, community and the support each person would leave behind. No immigration or legal outcome is promised.
