Privacy notice
The pages describing DA8N set no cookies and run no analytics. Signing in sets one cookie, because that is what being signed in is. There is no measurement anywhere, and here is exactly what that means.
1. What this notice covers
This notice covers the DA8N public website at www.da8n.com — the pages describing DA8N, its markets and its cities.
It also covers signing in and the member area on this host, which is new. Those pages behave differently from the rest of the site, so they have their own section below rather than an exception buried in this one.
It does not cover what DA8N does with your membership. Your profile, photos, messages, matches and RealMe identity verification are handled by the DA8N membership platform, which has its own privacy notice and its own controller relationship with you. That is true whether you reach it from this host or from the Date9ja app — it is one account and one platform behind both. Its notice is at the membership app.
The controller for this website is [legal entity name], registered at [registered address].
2. What the public pages collect from you
Nothing. On the pages describing DA8N — home, markets, cities, guides, comparisons, the explainers and these legal documents — there is no form, no newsletter field and no comment box. There is nothing on them for you to submit, so there is nothing submitted. Reading them does not require signing in and does not record that you read them.
Specifically, and verified against this site's source code:
- No cookies. These pages set no cookies of any kind — not necessary ones, not preference ones, not advertising ones. You can read every word of this site without one. Signing in sets one, and section 3 says exactly which.
- No analytics. No Google Analytics, no tag manager, no privacy-preserving analytics, no server-side event collection. Page views are not counted.
- No tracking pixels, no advertising or social media trackers, no fingerprinting.
- No browser storage. Nothing is written to local storage, session storage or IndexedDB.
- No third-party requests. Typefaces are downloaded at build time and served from this domain rather than from a font service, and every image comes from this domain. Loading a page here contacts no other company's servers.
- No calls to the DA8N platform. These pages are prerendered. They make no request to any DA8N backend and hold no credential that would let them.
There is no cookie banner on this site, and that is not an omission. A banner exists to ask for consent, consent is needed for cookies that are not strictly necessary, and there are none of those here — on the public pages there are no cookies at all, and in the member area there is exactly one that is strictly necessary. Asking you to agree to something that is not happening would be theatre.
3. Signing in, and the member area
Signing in is a form, so it sends what you type: your email address or phone number and your password, or — if you are resetting a password — your email address or phone number and the six-digit code we send you. Those go to the DA8N membership platform to be checked. Nothing else on the page is sent with them, and they are not logged by this website.
Creating an account, and building a profile. If you create a DA8N account on this site, the form sends your first name, your last name, your date of birth, your gender, who you are interested in, and your email address or phone number with a password you choose. Your last name is stored but is never shown to other members. Your date of birth is stored; other members see your age, never the date.
Setting up a profile then asks for things you may give or skip — all of it is optional, and none of it is needed to use DA8N. In full, that is: your city and country; what you are looking for, in your own words and as a choice from a list; photographs and short introduction videos; your height, body type, fitness, smoking, drinking and diet; your religion; the languages you speak; your job title, occupation, school or institution and education level; whether you have children, whether you want them, and how many you have; the age range you would like to meet; a free-text description of who you are hoping to meet; a few multiple-choice questions about what matters to you in a relationship; and a private list of dealbreakers.
Answers marked private on screen are shown only to you — your religion and your dealbreakers are the two in this list. You can change or remove any of it later, and clearing an answer in the setup flow removes it rather than leaving the old one in place.
We do not ask for your race or your ethnicity here. Those are planned as separate, optional fields with their own privacy settings, and until that is built properly they are not collected at all.
Photographs, videos and anything you attach to a message go to a storage service, and come back from it. This is the one exception to everything said below about third parties, and it runs in both directions, so it is worth being exact.
Uploading. When you add a photo or a video, the membership platform issues a short-lived, single-purpose upload address and your browser sends the file directly to the storage service that holds it. A photograph is resized in your browser first. In neither case does the file pass through this website's server, and no cookie is attached to the transfer.
This now includes images and videos you send inside a conversation. They travel exactly the same way — a short-lived upload address, straight from your browser, no cookie attached — but they are a different kind of thing from a profile photo, and we would rather say so than let one sentence quietly cover both. A profile photo is something you publish for other members to see. A file you attach to a message is part of a private conversation between you and one other person. The storage service holds it as bytes and cannot read your messages, but it does receive the same technical details listed below, and the file is held there in the same way. The text of your messages never goes to the storage service — only the attached file does. You can only attach images and videos; there is no voice messaging on DA8N.
Viewing. When your photos or videos are shown back to you — on the photo step while you are setting up, for instance — your browser loads them from that same storage service on a short-lived signed address, not from this website. That is a request to another company's server each time the page draws them.
What the storage service necessarily receives, in both directions: your IP address, your browser's user-agent string, and the signed address of the specific file. That address contains the file's storage path, and the path is organised by account: it includes your internal account number and a profile identifier. Both are numbers we generate; neither is your name, your email address or your phone number. The practical consequence, stated plainly rather than left for you to work out: the storage service can tell that two files belong to the same person, because the folder path says so. It cannot learn who that person is from the path alone. We also tell your browser not to send the page address it came from, so the service is not told which DA8N page you were looking at. It holds the files on our behalf as a processor and does not use them for anything else. We have not asked it to profile you and it has no agreement with us permitting that — but an IP address is personal data, and a company that serves you a file knows your IP address. There is no arrangement under which that is not true.
Chats are live, and that means your app keeps one connection open to us. So that a message reaches you the moment it is sent rather than when you next reload, the member area opens a single long-lived connection to the DA8N membership platform while you have the app open, and we send messages and notifications down it as they happen. It is the same platform the rest of the app already talks to, signed in with the same cookie described below — no other company is involved, and nothing about this connection goes to the storage service or anywhere else.
What is genuinely different about it, said plainly: because it stays open, it tells our own servers that your app is open. Opening and closing it, and it dropping when your device sleeps or loses signal, are things we can therefore see. It renews itself every few minutes while the app is open, and that counts as account activity in the ordinary way — the same way loading any page does. The practical consequence, which we would rather you read here than work out later: if you leave DA8N open in a tab and walk away, other members may keep seeing you as recently active, because as far as our servers are concerned your app is still there. Closing the tab ends it.
We use the connection to deliver your messages and notifications and for nothing else. If your browser cannot open it, or you block it, the app still works: it checks for new messages when you open a conversation, when you send something, and when you come back to the tab.
One cookie, and this is it. When you sign in successfully, the DA8N platform issues a session cookie named d8n_web_session and this site passes it to your browser. It is what keeps you signed in from one page to the next; without it, signing in would not do anything. Specifically:
- It is strictly necessary. It exists because you asked to be signed in, it carries no measurement, and it is not used to profile you or to track you between sites. Under UK/EU rules a strictly necessary cookie does not require consent, which is why you are not asked for it.
- It is
HttpOnly, so page scripts cannot read it, which limits what a cross-site scripting bug could steal. - It is host-only — it is set for
www.da8n.comalone and no parent domain, so it is never sent to any other DA8N or D8N host. A practical consequence: being signed in here does not sign you in on the Date9ja app, even though it is the same account. You sign in on each. - Its path is
/api/v1, so your browser does not even send it when fetching an ordinary page — only when the app calls the membership platform. - It is
SameSite=Laxand, in production,Secure: it is not attached to requests started by other websites, and it is not sent over plain HTTP. - It lasts as long as the session the membership platform issued, and signing out ends it. Changing your password is designed to end every session you have anywhere — that is the platform's behaviour rather than this website's, so this notice describes it as the platform's commitment and not as something this site enforces.
Nothing else is stored in your browser. No local storage, no session storage, no IndexedDB, no second cookie for preferences or for measurement.
The storage service above is the only third party your browser contacts. Every other request the member area makes goes to this website's own address, and this site's server forwards it to the DA8N membership platform. The exception is your own photos and videos, going up and coming back, as described above. There is no analytics code and no advertising code anywhere in the member area, and no third party is embedded in a page except your own media.
Legal basis: performance of our contract with you (UK/EU GDPR Article 6(1)(b)) — you asked for a DA8N account, and creating it, checking your credentials, keeping you signed in and storing the profile you choose to build is how that is done. The special category data described in section 6 rests on your explicit consent, which is what joining a dating service and telling us who you want to meet is.
4. What our hosting provider records
Serving a web page requires receiving a request, and a request carries technical information. Our hosting provider, acting as our processor, records standard server log data for each request: your IP address, the page requested, the time, the HTTP status, your browser's user-agent string and the referring page if your browser sends one.
An IP address is personal data. We use these logs only to serve the site, keep it available and defend it against abuse and denial-of-service attacks. We do not use them to build a profile of you, we do not combine them with anything else, and we do not try to identify you from them.
Legal basis: our legitimate interests in operating and securing the service (UK/EU GDPR Article 6(1)(f)). Because this processing is strictly necessary to deliver a page you asked for and involves no cookie or similar technology, it does not require consent.
Retention: [log retention period], after which logs are deleted by the provider on a rolling basis.
Processor and location: [hosting provider and region].
5. When you follow a link away from this site
Some pages link elsewhere — to the Date9ja app, which serves the same account, to the D8N platform site, and on comparison pages to other dating services so you can check what we say about them. Signing in and creating an account no longer leave this site; they are the pages described in section 3. Following any such link takes you to a site we do not control, which will have its own privacy notice and may set its own cookies. We do not share anything about you with those sites; your browser simply makes a request to them as it would to any site you visit.
6. Special category and children's data
Information about who someone dates can reveal sexual orientation, and in some contexts religion or ethnicity. That is special category data under UK/EU data protection law and is handled with corresponding care.
Until the member area moved onto this host, none of it was processed here. That is no longer true and the change is worth stating plainly: if you create a DA8N account on this site, telling us your gender and who you are interested in can reveal your sexual orientation. It is collected because it is the whole basis on which a dating service can show you anyone at all, it rests on your explicit consent, and it is never used for advertising, never sold, and never shared beyond the membership platform and the members your profile is shown to.
Race and ethnicity are not collected on this site. Religion is optional and, if you give it, is shown only to you. Neither is ever inferred from anything else you tell us.
DA8N is for adults aged 18 and over. This site is not directed at children and contains nothing aimed at them. Account creation asks for a date of birth and refuses anyone under 18, here and again on the membership platform, and we do not knowingly process any child's personal data.
Information about your children, if you choose to give it. Profile setup asks optionally whether you have children, whether you want children, and how many children you have. That is information about you as a parent — a count and two preferences — and we do not ask for any child's name, age, photograph or any other detail about them. Like every other answer in that flow it may be skipped or removed.
7. Your rights
Depending on where you live you have rights over your personal data — to access it, to have it corrected or erased, to restrict or object to its processing, to data portability, and to withdraw consent where consent was the basis. These rights apply under the UK GDPR, the EU GDPR, Nigeria's Data Protection Act, South Africa's POPIA, and applicable state privacy laws in the United States and Canada.
In practice there is very little this website holds that a request could reach: the server logs described in section 4, identifiable only by IP address. A request about your membership account, profile, photos, messages or RealMe verification needs to go to the membership app, because that is where the data is.
To exercise a right, or to ask a question about this notice, see how to get in touch — it names where each kind of request goes, and says plainly which route is not yet published. Our data protection representative is [DPO or representative, where required].
You also have the right to complain to a supervisory authority: the ICO in the United Kingdom, your national authority in the EU, the NDPC in Nigeria, or the Information Regulator in South Africa. You are welcome to raise it with us first, but you do not have to.
8. International transfers
DA8N is one global network, and this site is served from a content delivery network with points of presence in many countries, so a request may be handled outside the country you are in. Where personal data moves out of the UK or EEA it is covered by [transfer mechanism — adequacy decision or standard contractual clauses].
9. Security
This site is served over HTTPS only. It holds no database and stores no member data of its own: what you type reaches it, is forwarded to the membership platform, and is not written down here. That is a deliberate design choice rather than a happy accident — the most reliable way to protect information on a public surface is for that surface never to keep it — but it is a narrower claim than “this site never sees member data”, which stopped being true when the member area moved onto this host. The one credential involved is the session cookie in section 3, which the platform issues and this origin relays; it is never stored server-side here.
10. Changes to this notice
If this site gains a form, an analytics tool, an embed, a cookie or any new browser storage, this notice is updated in the same change that introduces it, and the "last updated" date above changes. Material changes will be signposted on the site rather than made quietly.
That has happened twice, both on 7 October 2026. First the member application moved onto this host, which added a sign-in form, calls to the DA8N membership platform and the session cookie described in section 3; sections 1, 2 and 3 were rewritten in the same change. Then account creation and profile setup moved here too, which added the personal data listed in section 3, the direct-to-storage photo upload that is this site's only third-party request, and the special category data now described in section 6. Nothing about measurement changed in either: there is still none.
A third change the same day added short introduction videos to profile setup. Video bytes travel the same direct-to-storage path as photographs, so section 3 and section 5 now describe both; no new third party, cookie or measurement was introduced.
A fourth change, also on 7 October 2026, corrected this notice rather than the product, and the correction is worth stating plainly because the previous version was wrong in our favour. Section 3 described photographs and videos going UP to storage and said nothing about them coming BACK: the stored files are loaded from that same service every time your own photos are shown to you, which is a continuing request to another company's server rather than a one-off transfer. The notice also said there was "no embedded third-party content anywhere in the member area", which that rendering made untrue. Section 3 now describes both directions and what the storage service receives; the pages that render media were changed in the same slice to stop sending it the DA8N address you were on. Section 3's list of what profile setup collects was also incomplete — it did not mention the questions about children or body type — and is now written out in full. Nothing about measurement changed: there is still none.
A fifth change, on 8 October 2026, added the city list that profile setup now offers when you say where you live. It introduced no new third-party request and no new personal data; what it added is the credit in section 11, and a single optional field recording which entry in that list you picked, if you picked one.
11. Where our city list comes from
When you tell us where you live, the city box suggests places from a list we hold ourselves. That list comes from GeoNames, used under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence, which asks us to credit them — this section is that credit.
Nothing about you is sent to GeoNames. We downloaded their list of countries, regions and cities once and keep our own copy, so searching it is a request to DA8N and to nobody else. What you type in that box is not shared with them, or with any other mapping or location company: this site uses no geocoding service, and your device is never asked for its location.
You do not have to use the suggestions. If your town is not in the list, type it and we keep exactly what you wrote. Where you live is optional either way — you can leave it blank, and you can change or clear it later.
